Companies Launch Industry's First Certified Document Signing Service for Automatically Verifying Documents SAN JOSE, Calif. and WELLESLEY, Mass. — Oct. 5, 2004 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) and GeoTrust, Inc., a leader in identity verification solutions for e-business and a leading certification authority, today announced the availability of a jointly-developed certified document service or "CDS" solution. Now, people who receive certified Adobe® PDF files can be automatically assured that the author's identity has been verified by a trusted organization, and that the document has not been altered. Through the broad reach of the free Adobe Reader® (distributed over half-a-billion times to date), organizations can easily use the new GeoTrust True Credentials digital signing solution for creating trusted electronic documents to conduct business and communicate with customers, constituents, partners and suppliers. Organizations that communicate critical information to broad audiences, such as financial services organizations and government agencies, are struggling to deal with alarming new trends — from phishing to document forgery — which in turn erode customer confidence and cause liability issues. Now with CDS, individuals and organizations can send PDF documents and forms with added assurances of validating identity and information integrity. CDS signing significantly raises the level of document integrity and verification over traditional digital signing because the user's digital credentials must be issued by a WebTrust-certified authority using strict vetting guidelines, and then must be stored on a secure cryptographic hardware device. For example, for deploying certificates on individual desktops, GeoTrust issues an individual or organizational role (such as, "Investor Relations Dept.") a digital credential stored on cryptographic hardware device that is FIPS 140-1 Level 2 or higher. An individual can use Adobe Acrobat® software to digitally sign the document on the desktop, storing their key securely on a SafeNet iKey token. Alternatively, Adobe LiveCycle™ Document Security software allows organizations to quickly certify large volumes of PDF files, such as bank statements or financial reports. In this case, GeoTrust issues an organization a digital credential, which is stored on SafeNet's Luna server-based key management system for added protection. LiveCycle Document Security software accesses the credential to apply the digital signature. In both cases, the PDF file automatically validates to the recipient when opened in Adobe Reader 6.0. "With the ability to certify documents, essential business processes that used to rely on expensive and time-consuming paper-based forms can now be fully and more securely automated," said Ivan Koon, senior vice president, Intelligent Document business unit at Adobe. "By working with GeoTrust, we are delivering a cost-effective way for certifying document authenticity and integrity, allowing for more secure communications across and beyond the enterprise." "The proliferation of phishers, identity thieves and fraudulent businesses has created an environment of distrust that has the potential to undermine legitimate online business transactions and communications," said Neal Creighton, CEO of GeoTrust. "But, by certifying that documents are genuine and tamper-proof, the certified document services solution from Adobe and GeoTrust should prove invaluable in allowing organizations and consumers to confidently conduct e-business."
