What is MX?
MX identifies the new products that are part of the Macromedia MX product family. Each product that uses the MX mark is a major new version of that product. Together, the Macromedia MX products make it possible to build a new generation of Internet solutions.
Is Director MX 2004 compatible with Apple Macintosh OS X and Microsoft Windows XP operating systems?
Director MX 2004 is compliant with the "Designed for XP" logo program, is fully carbonized, and works natively on Macintosh OS 10.2.6 or 10.3. Director MX 2004 also runs natively on Windows 2000.
How can I send in feedback or a feature request for a future version of Director?
We're always on the lookout for great feature requests. In fact, we try to incorporate many feature requests into each release. Send your ideas to Macromedia Software Feature Requests, where Director development team members will evaluate them.

General Authoring

Can I use other Macromedia products with Director MX 2004?
Director MX 2004 works efficiently and effectively with the entire Macromedia product line. For example, developers can:
  • Import Macromedia Flash MX files into Director MX 2004 and control them with Lingo or JavaScript.
  • Launch and edit graphic cast members in Macromedia Fireworks MX 2004, and optimize those cast members in Fireworks MX 2004 directly from within Director MX 2004.
  • Use Macromedia server technologies with Director MX 2004, including Macromedia ColdFusion MX and Macromedia Flash Communication Server MX.
Do I need both the Macintosh and Windows product versions to create cross-platform movies?
Director MX 2004 enables you to create executables and Shockwave content for both Macintosh and Windows platforms from both the Mac version and the Windows version of the product. (Some restrictions do apply. Please see TechNote #19190.) We do recommend that you test your content on all platforms where you expect users to view it. In addition, you may need to debug your content on the target platform if you are creating content that has system level controls.
What media types does Director MX 2004 support?
Director MX 2004 is the industry leader in supported multiple media types, with support for QuickTime video, Macromedia Flash, bitmaps, text, vectors, sound, and 3D content, as well as streaming RealVideo and RealAudio. For more information, visit the Director Support Center.
Does Director MX 2004 require a hardware key?
Director MX 2004 does not require a hardware key.
How do I create multi-user content using Director MX 2004?

Playback and Distribution

How do people view Director content on the web?
Developers save their Director content as Shockwave movies viewable on the web. Users view this content from within all popular browsers using Shockwave Player.
How many people have Shockwave Player installed? How do they get it?
Today, most web users (over 390 million) have Shockwave Player installed and can immediately view Shockwave content. Users can visit the Shockwave Player Download center or Shockwave.com to easily download the latest player. You can also review more Shockwave Player statistics.
Can I distribute Shockwave Player with my Shockwave content?
Yes, developers who have created CD-ROM content that depends on either the Macromedia Flash or Shockwave Players technology are allowed to distribute the players themselves (rather than requiring customers to download the players from the web). Does Director MX 2004 create executable files?
Director MX 2004 can create executables. Director MX 2004 enables you to create executables and Shockwave content for both Macintosh and Windows platforms from both the Mac version and the Windows version of the product.
Is a run-time fee required to distribute Director MX 2004 executables?
We do not require run-time fees. Developers must simply complete and abide by the Macromedia Run-time Distribution Agreement.
What is the Macromedia policy regarding the distribution of applications created with Macromedia Director MX 2004?
With the Made With Macromedia Program, our royalty-free licensing policy, you can distribute applications created in Director MX 2004 to millions of Windows and Macintosh platforms for free.

I already own a version of Director. What are my upgrade options?

I just purchased Director MX. Do I have to pay full price for the new version?
If you purchased Macromedia Director MX between December 6, 2003 and 60 days after the first ship date of Macromedia Director MX 2004, you may be eligible for a free upgrade to Macromedia Director MX 2004. Please visit Macromedia ServiceNote for information on obtaining your free upgrade. This is a limited time offer.
Does Macromedia offer competitive upgrades?
We are not offering competitive upgrades on Director MX 2004 at this time.

Why should I register my product?
When you register, your serial number is recorded into our database. This allows us to verify the number for you if it has been lost. How can I report a bug in the application or an error in the documentation?
Please submit bug reports, documentation errors, and feature requests through our Software Feature Request and Bug Report online form. Our software engineers review these reports and do their best to address requests in the next product release cycle.
How can I get help using Director MX 2004?

What is Product Activation?
Product activation is an anonymous, secure, and hassle-free one-time process that authenticates licensed users during the installation process. Activation is not required for products acquired under a volume license agreement. The activation process verifies that the serial number is legitimate and has not been activated on more systems than allowed by the EULA. It does not affect the ability of licensed users to use their software as they always have. Can I install my copy of Director MX 2004 product on Macintosh and Windows machines?
For the MX 2004 family of products, Macromedia now ships Macintosh and Windows installers on the same CD. The license that ships with Director MX 2004 allows you to install on either an Apple Macintosh or Microsoft Windows platform. The EULA allows for installation on a primary machine and a secondary machine (home or laptop), but they must be the same platform.
If I install my copy of Director MX 2004 product on the Microsoft Windows platform first, can I switch my license to the Apple Macintosh or vice versa?
When you activate your MX 2004 product, you will have chosen your primary platform. Once you have chosen the primary platform for your installation, all subsequent installs must be on the same platform. Macromedia does not offer cross platform upgrades at this time.
