Designing a distinctive table
page: 1 2 3
When you???re working with complex data, a table may be your best option. Often, a logical series of rows and columns can communicate more clearly than paragraphs. Adobe® InDesign® 2.0 introduces a robust table feature that makes it easy to line up those rows and columns???and to format them in striking ways. Here we show you how you can make an easy-to-read table while using the graphical power of InDesign to integrate it into the style of your document.
main

Create a frame for the table.
Create a frame using the type tool. Or, click an insertion point in an existing text frame where you want the table to appear. Your table can be the only thing in a frame, or it can be part of a text frame.
step1
Insert a table.
Choose Table > Insert Table and specify the number of rows and columns. A table grid appears, with the columns evenly distributed across the frame. The height of the rows is determined by the default text size. You can add rows or columns later by choosing Table > Insert > Row or Table > Insert > Column. InDesign automatically adds a row to the table if you tab out of the last cell in the last row.
You can also create a table from existing tab-delimited text: just select the text with the type tool and choose Table > Convert Text to Table. Indesign creates a new cell at each tab character and a new row at each hard return.
Alternatively, you can import a table from another application, such as Microsoft Word.
step2
Resize the cells.
To distribute rows evenly in the frame, hold down the Shift key over the bottom row of the table until the cursor is a double-headed arrow. Then drag the cursor to the bottom edge of the frame.
You can also resize cells by choosing Table > Cell Options > Rows and Columns, and specifying new values. Or, to resize cells manually, position the text cursor over the line you want to move until it changes to a double-headed arrow; then move the line.
