Studio 8 Pricing and Configuration Change Overview

Why did the price of Studio increase?

Studio 8 now includes Contribute 3 and FlashPaper 2, in addition to the Professional edition of Flash. FlashPaper enables faculty, staff and students to further the content creating process by converting any file types into a web-ready PDF or FlashPaper file. Contribute 3 supports campus web administrators define and share templates with faculty, staff, and students for adding and updating web content – but in a controlled and managed workflow to preserve website integrity. Flash Professional allows you to create more compelling content, and easily encode and add high quality video to your website. With five products in one suite, Studio 8 offers rich functionality, cross-product work, and a common user interface.

At an educational SRP of $299 discounted 70% from regular commercial pricing, Studio 8 offers tremendous value and benefit for creating and delivering rich online content and applications, and teaching and learning digital communication skills.
Was the price increase only for Studio?

No, the price increase is not exclusive to Studio. It also affects the price for the component products Dreamweaver, Flash Professional, and Fireworks.

Product Price Increase*
Studio US $199 to $299
Dreamweaver US $99 to $199
Flash Pro US $149 to $249
Fireworks US $99 to $149

*Pricing examples reflect Suggested Retail Prices for Entry Level of the Macromedia Education Volume License Program. Actual prices are determined by the reseller. Prices are subject to change at Macromedia’s sole discretion and prices will vary depending on your purchasing program and level.

What’s the difference between Studio 8 and Studio MX 2004?

Studio 8 combines the latest releases of Dreamweaver, Flash Professional, Fireworks, Contribute, and FlashPaper, offering a new level of expressiveness and efficiency to create websites, interactive learning experiences, and mobile content. Studio MX 2004 includes MX 2004 versions of Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, and Freehand. Flash Professional is only included in Studio MX 2004 with Flash Professional editions of the suite. Contribute and FlashPaper are not included in Studio MX 2004.

Why was FreeHand removed?

After every release we do extensive research with our customers. Based on the feedback this time around, we decided to make a change. FreeHand was replaced by the addition of Contribute and FlashPaper to better fulfill the typical design-develop-maintain workflow needs of our customers.

Note that owners of FreeHand can still upgrade into Studio 8 and continue to use their existing FreeHand license.

Program Overview

What is the Macromedia Education Volume License Program (EVLP)?

The Macromedia Education Volume License Program (EVLP) is a program of discounts for volume purchasing of Macromedia software, upgrades, subscriptions, technical support, and training sold to K12 schools, colleges, and universities in the United States and Canada. The EVLP has three options available to education customers: Base, High Volume, and Premier.

Each Macromedia product is given a point value. The discount you receive is determined by the total number of points for either each individual order or an initial High Volume or Premier qualifying order.  In general, the greater the size of the order, the greater the discount level is.

What is the Base option (previously named ATLO) of the Education Volume License Program?

Base EVLP is a program of three levels of discounts for purchasing Macromedia software, upgrades, subscriptions, technical support, and training sold to colleges, universities, K-12 schools, and K-12 school districts in the U.S. and Canada. Each Macromedia product is assigned a point value. The total number of points for each individual order determines the discount you receive on that particular order: the greater the size of the order, the greater the discount level. This program option offers a new Entry level with no minimum point requirement. The Base option is one of three volume-license options available to education customers as part of the Education Volume License Program (EVLP).

What is the High Volume option of the Education Volume License Program?

High Volume EVLP is a program that includes two discount levels for purchasing Macromedia software, upgrades, subscriptions, technical support, and training sold to colleges, universities, K-12 schools, and K-12 school districts in the U.S. and Canada. Each Macromedia product assigned a point value. The total number of points for your initial order determines the discount level you receive for all subsequent orders: the greater the size of the initial order, the greater the discount level. The minimum points required on an initial order are 250 to qualify for High Volume EVLP.  In addition to the initial purchase discount, the same level of discount is available to the entire education institution for reorders following the initial order. There is no minimum point requirement for reorders.  High Volume EVLP is one of three volume-license options available to education customers as part of the Education Volume License Program (EVLP).

What is the Premier option (previously named PEP) of the Education Volume License Program?

Premier EVLP is a program of discounts for high-volume purchasing of Macromedia software, upgrades, subscriptions, technical support, and training sold to colleges, universities, K-12 schools, and K-12 school districts in the U.S. and Canada. Each Macromedia product is assigned a point value. The total number of points of your initial order determines the discount you receive for all subsequent orders: the greater the size of the order, the greater the discount level. The minimum points required on an initial order are 3,000 to qualify for the Premier EVLP.  This program offers the maximum discounts available for Macromedia products. In addition to the initial purchase discount, the same level of discount is available for reorders following the initial order. Premier is one of three volume-license options available to education customers as part of the Education Volume License Program (EVLP).

I’ve purchased through education volume licensing before. Have any features and benefits been added recently?

Yes. Changes to the EVLP as of October 19, 2004 include:

  • A change in the program name from ATLO to EVLP
  • There are now 3 options available: Base, High Volume, and Premier
  • An Entry Level tier which has no minimum order requirement has been added to Base EVLP
  • Some products such as Director, Contribute, and ColdFusion now have an increased point value, making it possible to reach a greater discount level when orders include these products

Are other licensing options available from Macromedia?

In addition to the three options provided through EVLP, a variety of other license options are available to education customers as part of the Macromedia Volume License Program. The three EVLP options are Base, High Volume, and Premier. Additionally, K-12 customers seeking school-wide use of Macromedia software will find that the K-6 Site License and Studio, meet the needs of both elementary and secondary schools.

How does a customer purchase products through the EVLP?

Customers may purchase through Authorized Education Resellers.

Program Features and Requirements

What are the major features of the EVLP?

What is the minimum purchase requirement through the EVLP?

There is no minimum purchase requirement to participate in the Entry Level of EVLP.  Also, for High Volume option customers after placing an initial qualifying order, there is no minimum purchase requirement for reorders and the original discount level is still applied.

Are both Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows applications included through the EVLP?

Customers may mix and match any Macromedia product platform, as well as upgrades, subscriptions, technical support, and training.

Is the EVLP similar to licensing programs offered by other companies?

Is technical support discounted?

Technical support offerings are not discounted, but they are assigned points to help customers achieve a higher program level—and therefore a higher discount on their software purchases.

Software Subscriptions

Are Macromedia Software Subscriptions offered through the EVLP?

Yes. Macromedia Software Subscriptions are available as part of the EVLP program.

What is a Macromedia Software Subscription?

Macromedia Software Subscription coverage provides the assurance that a school always has the latest version of the Macromedia software. Updates are automatically sent upon release, ensuring that you’re using the latest and greatest technology from Macromedia. Additionally, Software Subscriptions enable schools to more easily budget and avoid costly individual software upgrade purchases. This extremely beneficial program provides a two-year Subscription period for education customers.

  • The two-year Subscription coverage period begins with the initial product-purchase date, and expires on the last day of the month after the two-year anniversary of that date.
  • The purchase of a Subscription is optional for Base and High Volume purchases.
  • If a Subscription is purchased, it must be purchased with the software license.
  • Renewal Subscriptions can be purchased up to three months prior to the Subscription expiration date.
  • When renewing any Subscription, customers should renew all licenses covered under the Subscription at the same time.

If I have a Macromedia Software Subscription and a new version of a product is released, how do I receive my new software?

Once a new version has been released, we’ll ship the appropriate software directly to the original “Ship To” contact person on the purchase order (unless the customer has notified Macromedia that the contact person has changed). You may then install the current release up to the number of licenses with active coverage. Subscription customers receive a Macromedia Volume License Program Certificate that includes:

  • Right-to-copy licenses in accordance with the license purchase
  • One multi-user serial number per product family, per platform for all levels except Entry
  • The Macromedia End User License Agreement (as applicable) for both software and technical support purchases
  • One CD at no charge The upgrade is issued on a license-exchange basis. This means that your upgrade license is in exchange for use of the previous version. Using two versions of the software on a given computer requires two licenses. The Base and High Volume options of EVLP do not offer coterminous Subscriptions or Subscription pro-rating. If you prefer to have all your Subscriptions on the same renew schedule, you should consider the Premier EVLP which is designed for more global license management.

License Limitations

What are the limitations on the use of the Macromedia software products in my school?

Macromedia software sold to education customers is for use in qualifying K-12 educational and higher education institutions. Education Editions of Macromedia products may be used for instructional purposes by students, teachers, and faculty, but may not be used for any commercial or revenue-generating activities. Software may be installed only on school-owned or leased computers.

May we load the software on mobile computers that students use at home?

Yes, as long as the computers are owned or leased by the school. Licenses purchased through the EVLP may not be installed or used on computers personally owned by students, faculty, or staff unless otherwise specifically allowed in the end user license agreement or license certificate. We also offer aggressive education pricing on Macromedia products for purchase by both students and faculty for use on their personally owned computers. To purchase or receive additional information, contact your Authorized Education Reseller.

Is concurrent usage permitted for products purchased through the EVLP?

How does Macromedia ensure that educational institutions use only the number of software products that they have been licensed to use?

We may audit you and your records relating to your copying and use of the licensed software—no more than once yearly and during ordinary business hours, after giving reasonable advance notice—for the purpose of confirming your compliance with your certificate. Should we choose to conduct an audit, either party may elect that this audit be performed—on the behalf of Macromedia—by an independent party reasonably acceptable to both parties. You will allow auditors onsite within a reasonable period of time, not to exceed 20 calendar days from the date of the audit notification. If this audit reveals a shortfall in payment, you agree to immediately pay Macromedia the then-current suggested retail price for each copy or installation beyond the number of licenses purchased by you. If this audit reveals a shortfall in payment of more than 5%, you will (in addition to paying Macromedia the past-due amounts set forth above) reimburse Macromedia for the direct out-of-pocket expenses incurred in conducting this audit.

Does Macromedia charge for CDs and documentation?

We don’t charge for the initial CD which ships per product, per platform with each order. However, if you order additional CDs and documentation, there are additional fees.

What if I want additional CDs and documentation? Can I order them?

Yes. You may order additional CDs and documentation kits as separate items for an additional fee.

Can I purchase more CDs and documentation kits than licenses for any given product?

No. You may purchase only as many CDs and documentation kits as the number of licenses you have purchased per product.

Shipping and Returns

What is the Macromedia Education Volume License Program (EVLP) freight policy?

All EVLP orders are shipped from our warehouses using a two-day service (such as Federal Express second-day service) or an international equivalent. Resellers are responsible for adding freight charges to their purchase orders.

What is the return policy?

For the purposes of the EVLP, Macromedia will honor the warranty of the End-User License Agreement. Otherwise, Macromedia will not accept returns for EVLP orders. The only exception to this no-return policy will be for product exchanges on order entry errors corrected within 30 days of receipt of incorrect product.

Premier EVLP

What are the benefits of the Premier EVLP?

The Premier EVLP offers customers the following benefits:

  • Deepest possible discounts on Macromedia products
  • Purchase re-orders are at the same Premier discount level from the initial order purchase date
  • Coterminous Macromedia Subscriptions with semi-annual prorating (Subscriptions come up for renewal all at the same time)
  • Simplified license management, with a single serial number per product, per platform

Does Premier EVLP participation require a contract?

In most cases, the Premier EVLP does not require a contract. A complete set of terms and conditions is included with the initial purchase. However, any exceptions or modifications to the standard terms and conditions do necessitate a contract.

How is the Premier EVLP the same or different from the other Education Volume License Program (EVLP) options?

The Base, High Volume, and Premier options use the same point listings of Macromedia software, upgrades, subscriptions, technical support, and training for placing orders. For all programs, the size of the order determines the discount level. While Macromedia Software Subscriptions are available as an option throughout EVLP, customers purchasing through the Premier EVLP must purchase Subscriptions along with all software products ordered. Some other EVLP options have no minimum order requirements while Premier EVLP requires an initial order of at least 3,000 points. Benefits available to customers purchasing through the Premier EVLP include:

  • The maximum discounts available for Macromedia products
  • Your single largest purchase determines Premier pricing
  • Coterminous subscriptions with semi-annual prorating (all Subscriptions come up for renewal at the same time)
  • Simplified license management, with a single serial number per product platform

How many discount levels are available in the Premier EVLP?

The Premier EVLP has four point-based discount levels. A point break is the number of points you need to purchase your individual order at a specific discount level. The following point breaks have been established for each discount level:

Level Point Breaks
F 3,000 to 7,499 points
G 7,500 to 11,999 points
H 12,000 to 22,499 points
I 22,500+ points

Education customers who require a lower minimum order requirement should consider the Base or High Volume  EVLP options.

How much of a discount can I receive on software through Premier EVLP?

Discounts vary by program option, level and product selected. For a purchase quote, you can contact a Macromedia representative at premier@macromedia.com.

What is the minimum purchase requirement under the Premier EVLP?

You may purchase through the Premier EVLP with a minimum order of 3,000 points.

What is the minimum requirement for product reorders through the Premier EVLP?

Premier EVLP reorders require a minimum order of 150 points.

Why does the Premier EVLP require Macromedia Software Subscriptions to be purchased along with software products ordered?

Subscription coverage provides assurance that the latest versions of Macromedia software are available for use by the educational institution. This has proven such a beneficial offering that it’s been incorporated into the Premier EVLP.

My institution does not currently participate in the Premier EVLP, but we’ve looked at it in the past. What are some of the features and benefits that were added in October 2004?

The Premier EVLP features and benefits include the following:

  • The program is point-based, with initial order discounts determined by total points ordered. The minimum for participating in the Premier EVLP is 3,000 points. The minimum for reorders is 150 points.
  • In most cases, a contract is not required.
  • Server products are now available.
  • Items that previously did not count toward your initial order (such as technical support and Macromedia Software Subscriptions) now have point values that help you reach discount levels.
  • Discount level point breaks are now:

    Level F 3,000 to 7,499 points
    Level G 7,500 to 11,999 points
    Level H 12,000 to 22,499 points
    Level I 22,500+ points
  • Macromedia online courses accumulate points along with your order for software, upgrades, subscriptions, and technical support.

Are there any benefits granted to me as an existing PEP or Premier EVLP customer as a result of Premier EVLP program changes in October 2004?

Yes. The following table describes how tiers in the original PEP program map to levels in the updated Premier EVLP program. These new mappings are solely for reorders under existing PEP agreements and are not meant to offer renewal pricing or terms:

Previous Level Maps to: (for reorders)
Tier 1 Level D *
Tier 2 Level F
Tier 3 Level G
Tier 4 Level H

You will continue to obtain quotes for reorders from your Macromedia contact. You’ll see three major changes to these quotes:

  • You can now purchase server products, training, support, and subscriptions at special discount levels not available outside of Premier EVLP.
  • Your reorders can now consist of many more products, making it potentially easier to reach a minimum qualifying reorder (150 points for a reorder).
  • Subscription is now prorated according to the number of whole or partial six-month periods remaining in your contract. For example, if you place a reorder while you have 15 months left before the end of your contract, your subscription will then be based on three-fourths of the original subscription amount, plus the license fee for the new licenses being purchased.

* Please note that Level D is not available to new Premier EVLP customers. This level is valid only for customers who purchased at Tier 1 under the previous PEP program.

I have an existing PEP or Premier EVLP agreement and I notice that the features of the current program are different from those included in my agreement. Does this change the terms of my agreement?

Your terms will not change; all contracts in force will remain in force. When your contract is up for renewal, you’ll have the option of qualifying for the new program or renewing any Macromedia Subscription you have under another program, such as the EVLP.

How can I purchase through the Premier EVLP?

The Premier EVLP is sold directly by Macromedia. You can contact a Macromedia sales representative at premier@macromedia.com.
