This script demonstrates an easy way of randomizing the selection of a given number of objects. The user can specify a percentage of up to how many objects should be considerred relative (percent) to the number of objects in the current selection. If nothing is selected prior to calling the script then all page items of the foremost document are set as the initial selection.

My apologies to those experiencing crashes. I and others have tested this script in mixed environments running Mac OS X 10.5.5, Mac OS X 10.5.7, Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 (32-bit), Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit) and Windows XP. I have also had the chance to test this on a CS3 version on Leopard and Windows. So far I haven't been able to reproduce the crash. If I may ask, if you do experience a crash, could you please state the version of Illustrator and the OS you are running on, and if possible if your version of Illustrator has been modified (by installing plugins etc.).
In this new version I have tried to increase the amount of checking for erroneous data, either coming from the user or from the ExtendScript engine itself.
This new version also includes German localization if you need it. Thanks to my collegue Ulf S. for showing me that.
Starting with version 0.3 development is discontinued for the AppleScript version. Instead the focus will be on improving the ExtendScript version as it is tedious to keep two scripts in sync over distinct scripting languages.

FYI, seems to work in CS5/Lion but it's slow (which isn't surprising considering what it has to do). Thanks for the script!

Andre, Thank you !!! I have needed this tool/script so many times. You have just saved me a tremendous amount of time.
I had an issue with crashing at first but realized that you need to select all the objects or however many you need the script applied to and THEN run the script. If I did not CMD-A beforehand, I got the crash.
I am applying this to about 500 objects and takes about 10 seconds to select.
Thanks again.

Thanks for the script, it works fine. Do you think there is a way to speed this script up? I need it for random select 20000 objects. The script does it, but it needs hours. best greeting
