There’s a common problem when there are multiple versions of applications like Adobe® InDesign®, QuarkXPress®, Adobe Illustrator®… installed on the same computer. Double-clicking a file’s icon will often cause the wrong application version to launch. As a result, you might unwittingly re-save a document into a more recent file format, which could be a bad thing. Maybe it’s a customer file, and the customer might not be able to open the updated file when you e-mail it back to her. To work around this problem on Mac OS X, we’ve created Lightning Brain Soxy. LB Soxy fixes the problem by working as a ’stand-in’ for these applications, a bit akin to a traffic cop. To use Soxy, you have to reconfigure the Mac Finder so it uses Soxy to launch files with specific file name extensions, instead of using their ‘normal’ application. In the Finder, you would right-click or control-click any of the document file icons that Soxy can support, and select Get Info… Then you change the Open with: application popup to Soxy, and click Change All… More detailed instructions can be found further down this page. When you double-click any of these document types, Soxy will open them. It will quickly analyze the file, determine its version (e.g. CS, CS2, CS3,…), and it will then forward the document to the appropriate version of the associated application. This application then opens the document for you to see. As a bonus, Soxy will also change the document file’s icon to the appropriate icon, instead of the generic green Soxy icon that will be initially assigned to your documents.

Things have evolved - there is now a version of Soxy for Windows. Furthermore, no more need to fiddle with the 'Get Info' dialog. Finally, Soxy now supports a wider range of document and file formats.
