GrayL*a*b*

CIELab colorspace projection to grayscale. Lab is more perceptually linear than RGB,and dominant color is set with a single control, so this makes it easier in some cases to control the appearance of the result than other approaches like the color mix sliders in Photoshop. For grayscale conversion, it starts from the lab luminance channel (L*), then adjusts luminance according to color (technically, it adds a projection of the chrominance onto a specified angle in the (a*b*) space to the luminance). You can also use it to adjust the luminance of a color image according to hue, without converting to grayscale. By Tom Fiddaman, http://blog.metasd.com .
