"Gimme some skin!" says grand-prize winner
The verdict is in. Daniel Hardesty, a 26-year-old Web designer from Houston, is the grand-prize winner in the Adobe/Microsoft Gimme Some Skin! contest. Hardesty won for his skin titled "EWA" (seen at right), a reference to his personal Web site Electro Web Animation. Despite stiff competition, the contest judges found the combination of illustration and technical functionality in "EWA" to be superior.
Hardesty created his skin, which works as an alternative interface for Microsoft Windows Media Player, by first sketching the graphic using a Wacom tablet and Adobe® Photoshop®. After finishing the image, he created a skin definition file describing how the controls worked. Hardesty had already experimented with skins, creating one for a local music company, which helped when it came to the programming. "Once you do it the first time, the second time's a breeze," Hardesty says. "It's a lot of fun."
We know that Hardesty knows how to listen to music on his computer, but given the fact that he'll be receiving a Harman Kardon home entertainment system, chances are he'll be listening offline for the foreseeable future. Hardesty will receive an HKTS 2 Home-Cinema Speaker System, AVR 110 Audio/Video Receiver, and DVD 5 5-disc CD/DVD. Second-prize winners receive a CD-ReWritable hardware, software, and CD package that includes a Plextor PlexWriter 8/4/32 CD-Rewritable E-IDE drive; Plextor 12X CD-R Media 10-pack; and Roxio's Easy CD Creator 4 Deluxe. Third-prize winners get Rio 600 32MB Digital Audio Players.
