Creating a site mockup for a client can be an easy task, but accommodating the client’s ever-changing mind can be challenging and time consuming. You might find that you’re forever updating your site mockups to satisfy the client’s requirements for things even as simple as a sitemap (for example, your client may ask for additional pages under the product section to accommodate new devices).

Enter rich symbols! Rich symbols—graphic symbols with editable properties—are helpful for prototyping a site design. If you’re using a design element repeatedly, such as a sitemap icon, but may need to change it frequently (for example, different color, text, shape, or visibility), rich symbols can be a great timesaver.

This tutorial will show you how to create a rich symbol in Adobe® Fireworks® CS3. I’ll show you how to use the custom Create Symbol Script command to generate the JavaScript necessary to make a symbol with editable properties.
