Choose a color and paint freehand in your composition. In our image, we’re adding underwater vegetation, so we’ve chosen a green color, and then painted in a few stalks.

Photoshop allows you to save your custom brushes. This saves a lot of time and effort. To save your new brush, choose New Brush Preset from the Brushes palette menu (click the triangle in the top right corner of the palette). Then name your brush, and click OK. The new brush should appear in the Brushes palette.

Now that you know the basics, you can experiment with some of the other brush options. For example, in our image, we picked another texture, increased the brush diameter, changed a few other options in the Brushes palette, and then saved the brush. Now we can switch between the two new brushes we created without having to worry about the brush settings!
