Introducing Playbar Skins: New functionality and greater design flexibility

I'll begin by telling you about the new Adobe Captivate Playbar Skins (see Figure 2), which are really attractive and extremely functional. They also require special handling and planning when being brought into a RoboHelp project.

You can design whichever color scheme you desire and choose any combination of buttons—or choose not to have a playbar at all!

Also, there is a new Borders feature which allows you to place the Playbar under the "live" capture area of the demo, making it more attractive (see Figure 3).

Prior to the release of Adobe Captivate 2, the published output was simply the Captivate SWF file and a companion HTML file to tell the browser how to display the demo. Because of the spiffy new Playbar Skins feature, additional files are created to support them. Here is a comparison of the files outputted by the two different versions of Adobe Captivate (the italicized part of the filenames denotes the filename you specified for the Adobe Captivate project):

Adobe Captivate 1.01 (playbar is embedded in the SWF) output:

  • Adobe Captivate_demo.SWF (the actual demo)
  • Adobe Captivate_demo.HTM (displays the SWF file in web browser)

Adobe Captivate 2.0 (playbar skins yield more files that live outside the SWF) output:

  • Captivate_demo.SWF (the actual demo)
  • Captivate_demo.HTM (displays the SWF file in web browser)
  • Captivate_demo_skin.SWF (created to accommodate the Borders feature)
  • Standard.JS (gives instructions to the browser on loading skins)

Note: RoboHelp X5 (released almost four years ago) has difficulty handling the Adobe Captivate skin Borders feature and supporting files. It can be done, but it takes a bit of tweaking. Workarounds for RoboHelp X5 are discussed at the end of this article.
