Developing a Cross-platform Flash Game for Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana is a leader in the clothing and luxury goods sectors. When they asked me to devise a marketing project that could reach their customers all over the world and at the same time be supported on the most common devices, I immediately thought of the ubiquity of Macromedia Flash Player and decided to use Macromedia Flash for the project.

I knew that Flash would enable me to develop a rich cross-platform game that users can enjoy on their desktop computers as well as on their PDAs and Flash Lite–enabled mobile phones (see Figure 1).

A Flash-based cross-platform game

The name of the game is D&G For Realovers. Launched at the beginning of March 2005, the game is rather simple and funny. The object of the mobile version of the game is to dress a character with garments and accessories that truly resemble D&G fashion collections—all this in a relatively short time. The web version of the game is more complex and richer. This time, the game asks the user to look for his or her real lover. The game offers the user an amusing and curious experience and the chance of involving other users in various challenges.

In this article I walk you through the main stages of our development process, explain the challenges we had to face, and point out some of the limitations and benefits of the Flash technology, in particular of Flash for mobile.
