Developing a Cross-platform Flash Game for Dolce & Gabbana

Project Considerations

First we had to understand which devices we had to focus on and which technology we could rely on to build the game. The target market and the brand were crucial factors, too, so we had to take both technical aspects and marketing strategies into account. The game had to capture the users' attention and be available on different devices and in different geographical areas (America, Europe, and the Far East).

A further consideration was the extremely short amount of time we had been given to develop the game.

In short, this project presented us with the following challenges; we had to:

  • Provide standard wireless experiences on the various devices.
  • Design content for different markets and for different people, who have different needs and tastes.
  • Develop a rich user interface (instead of the traditional text-based interface).
  • Choose captivating graphics that could refer to the brand, products, and game theme.

All things considered, we opted for using Flash technology for this project—we used Macromedia Flash MX Professional 2004 to develop a mobile phone version of the game, which we then adapted to the more advanced PDA and desktop platforms. The game was designed to run on Flash Lite 1.1–enabled phones and requires Flash Player 6 and Flash Player 7 on the PDA and desktop platforms, respectively.
