Launch Fighters – Part 3: Porting Launch Fighters to a Mobile Phone

In Parts 1 and 2 of this Launch Fighters tutorial series, I created a game for the iRiver U10 and then optimized it for performance. The game development and optimization methods used for Launch Fighters can be applied to any Flash Lite content.

In this part, I'll show you how easy it is to port the game to another device. I'd also like to see how the performance compares between the U10 and perhaps a Nokia device.

I'll describe the steps I took to port Launch Fighters from the iRiver U10 to the Nokia 6680 phone based on Symbian Series 60 Feature Pack 2. These steps are the same general steps I would take to port Flash Lite content between any two devices running the same version of Flash Lite.

Prerequisite Knowledge

This article is intended for developers who are already familiar with Macromedia Flash from Adobe and Flash ActionScript. Before reading this article, you should be familiar with the Flash 8 authoring environment and scripting for Flash Lite 1.1. For information on getting starting with Flash Lite and mobile authoring using Flash 8, please refer to the Flash Lite Developer Center.

To use the source code and materials in this article, you will need Flash 8 Professional. You can run the compiled game files in the Flash 8 mobile emulator or in the browser using the desktop player. To experience the actual game performance and user interaction, however, you will also need the iRiver U10.
