Changes to the Macromedia Flash Asset Xtra in Director MX 2004

Major Changes to the Macromedia Flash Asset Xtra

The following list shows the major changes that were made to the Macromedia Flash Asset Xtra in Director MX 2004.

  • Macromedia Flash MX 2004 SWF playback support
  • Direct authoring time support for Macromedia Flash MX 2004 v2 components
  • The ability to group Macromedia Flash cast members together for playback under a common player.
  • Direct access to Macromedia Flash objects, movie clips, and text fields contained within a Flash sprite without first needing to use the getVariable() to gain a reference to the object
  • The ability to set properties directly on Macromedia Flash movie clips, text fields, and other clip types. (Direct setting of properties such as _x, _y, text, and htmlText was not possible in Director MX.)
  • Improved access to values and properties in Flash arrays, associative arrays, and objects makes it much easier to get and set them; you can also check the existence of a property without throwing errors.

In the following discussion, I will expand upon a number of these areas, and I will provide examples and observations on the implementation of these features. This discussion covers only the changes to the Macromedia Flash Asset Xtra in Director MX 2004. For more detailed examples on pre-existing features available in Director MX, please see my previous article: Using Macromedia Flash in Director.
