Getting started with InContext Editing for end users

Understanding your sign-in and edit options

Click the NEWS link, and then, press Ctrl+E (Windows) or Command+E (Mac) to open a login prompt (refer back to Figure 3).

Log in with the information you provided when accepting the invitation, described in the previous section. You'll see the page or draft in View mode. In order to edit the content, you have to switch to Edit mode. Click the Edit Page button just below My Account on the right. When entering Edit mode, you will notice an InContext Editing bar across the top of the page (see Figure 6).

When editing a page, you see the InContext
Editing bar at the top.

When in Edit mode, note that there are only certain areas on any page that can be edited. You can identify these by looking for the small square containing "I" in the upper, right-hand corner of a bounding box. Figure 7 shows three such areas:

  • The news headline area ("Sousa revives…")
  • The posting date area ("Posted on May 22, 2008")
  • The actual news content ("Already hard at work…")

This page contains three editable areas.

These areas, and the extent to which you can edit them (that is, what you can change, and how you can change it), have been specified by a developer. Also note that there are various editing modes that can be selected, as determined by a set of three icons on the far left of the toolbar (just below the Adobe headline) as shown in Figure 7:

  • Text formatting and style (the default)
  • Image insertion and management
  • Insertion and management of hyperlinks.

The default selection for Edit mode is Text formatting and style, and so this icon will always be shown as selected.

Note: When inviting users for an InContext Editing enabled site, a developer can elect to give you one of three levels of permissions:

  • Editor
  • Publisher

Each level determines the type of changes you're allowed to make. Because this option is determined by the webmaster at the time that you are invited to participate, you may find that some of the options shown in this article are not available to you. For example, on the page presented here, users can only modify the text of the title and date areas; they cannot apply different formatting.
