Facebook Flash Builder 4 Flex social networking

Note: This tutorial series was updated September 2011 to use the Adobe ActionScript 3 SDK for Facebook Platform, which uses OAuth 2.0. Facebook is requiring all applications to use OAuth 2.0 by October 1, 2011.

This tutorial series is designed to step developers new to Flex, new to Facebook, or new to these SDKs and APIs through the process of building and deploying either a desktop or web application that retrieves, displays, and posts Facebook data using the Adobe ActionScript 3 SDK for Facebook Platform. It consists of the following four parts:

  • In Part 1, Build and test locally, you use Flash Builder and the Adobe ActionScript 3 SDK for Facebook Platform to build a local desktop application that has Facebook login and logout functionality; requests extended permissions from the user; retrieves and displays user information; and retrieves, displays, and posts new status messages. Whether you ultimately want to deploy your application as a desktop application, a web application, or on Facebook.com, this is the easiest way to initially develop and debug your application.
  • In Part 2, Package and deploy as a desktop application, you package and install the application built in Part 1 as a desktop application. You also create native and badge installers which provide seamless installation experiences for users and add to the application the ability to be easily updated.
  • In Part 3, Modify and deploy as a web application, you modify the application built in Part 1 to be a web aplication instead of a desktop application. You specify web site settings for the application on Facebook.com, create the necessary HTML wrapper file to load the application and use the JavaScript SDK for login and application authorization, and deploy the files on your own web server.
  • In Part 4, Modify and deploy on Facebook.com, you modify the application built in Part 3 so that it can be deployed on Facebook.com or as an external web application. You specify Facebook Integration settings for the application on Facebook.com and modify the login/authorization functionality so the user is redirected to the appropriate pages on Facebook.com instead of displaying them in popup windows.

Before jumping into the tutorials, be sure you read the articles The technologies for building applications on the Flash and Facebook Platforms and The architecture of applications built on the Flash and Facebook Platforms.
