Flash Media Live Encoder Flash Media Server iOS streaming

Requirements

Prerequisite knowledge

Complete the lesson Install Flash Media Server 4.5 and verify streaming and the lesson Capture, encode, and deliver a live video stream over HTTP to Flash and iOS. Download and install Flash Media Live Encoder.

User level

Beginning

Required products

  • Flash Media Live Encoder (Download trial)
  • Flash Media Server (Download trial)

In this lesson, we’ll capture a single live video stream, encode it into three streams at three different bitrates, and deliver the multi-bitrate streams over HTTP to a media player running in Flash and to an iPad. The Flash media player you’ll see in this screencast is running on a desktop computer, but it could be running on any device that supports Flash, including Android devices and tablets.

This workflow has four steps:

  1. Use the Set-level File Generator tool to create a set-level F4M file and a set-level M3U8 file to describe the streams in the multi-bitrate set.
  2. Use Flash Media Live Encoder to capture and encode the streams and send them to Flash Media Server.
  3. Flash Media Server and its customized Apache HTTP Server automatically package the content for Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming (HDS) and Apple HTTP Live Streaming (HLS).
  4. Request the set-level F4M file from the Flash media player. Request the set-level M3U8 file from the iPad.
