We're really excited about the upcoming release of Adobe® Integrated Runtime (AIR), formerly code-named Apollo. And we know that a lot of you are excited, too, because we've already seen an incredible number of applications built using the alpha and beta versions of Adobe® AIR™.

To celebrate some of these early applications, we're inviting all of you to participate in a competition using Adobe AIR beta. The Adobe AIR Developer Derby will give you the opportunity to impress the world with an awesome application, as well as a chance to win some great prizes.

To get started, download the tools you need to develop your Adobe AIR application using Flex or HTML/Ajax and then build an application that will blow away the judges.

Categories and judging process

Entries will be judged on originality, visual design and appeal, usability, and application of Adobe AIR functionality in the following categories: best business application, best community application, and wild card.

Best business application

This category is for an application with a business or enterprise focus that utilizes Adobe AIR functionality. Applications might include data entry applications, data analysis tools, or desktop visualization of online data among others. The two winners in this category will be selected according to:

  • Best AIR application built with HTML/JavaScript
  • Best AIR application built with Flash/Flex

Best community application

This category is for an application with a community or social focus that combines content from one or more sources. Applications in this category will utilize web APIs, complement existing web applications, and take advantage of Adobe AIR functionality. Applications may include social networks, mashups, and chat applications. The two winners in this category will be selected according to:

  • Best AIR application built with HTML/JavaScript
  • Best AIR application built with Flash/Flex

Wild card

Sometimes developers completely surprise us with how they use Adobe AIR. This category is for those applications that can't be defined by the other contest categories. It might be a game or a general utility, or something altogether unexpected. We can't say what this category might include until we see it.

Best of Show

The Best of Show prize will be awarded to the overall top Adobe AIR application, and the winner will be selected from one of the category winners.

Prizes and recognition

The Best of Show winner will receive the trip of a lifetime, a travel certificate valued at up to US$100,000 to be used for the travel of your choice!

The five category winners will each receive the "ultimate development environment" to power your Adobe AIR development (and play) for years to come:

  • One Mac Pro 8-core system with 4 GB RAM and 1.5 TB storage
  • Two Dell 2707WFP 27-inch widescreen monitors

  • One Herman Miller Aeron chair
  • One pair of Bose QuietComfort 3 noise canceling headphones
  • One copy of Adobe Flex Builder 3, Macintosh edition
