Create iZotope PhotonShow themes using Macromedia Flash MX

PhotonShow is an end-user application from iZotope that turns Macromedia Flash movies into personal photo shows. The photo shows have various display “themes,” such as postcards, old tv, or psychedelic. With Macromedia Flash, you can create your own photo display themes—and, what's more, you can then sell them to consumers through the iZotope website.

This tutorial covers how to create and distribute custom SWF files that can played on devices (such as mobile devices) to display the personal photo shows. We'll discuss the basic concepts of building an iZotope theme, review the sample FLA files, and then provide some tips and tricks for customizing the files.

How PhotonShow began
A year ago, our development team began brainstorming on a project that would enable people to present and send their personal photos. Our goal was to make it simple for users to compile their photos with captions and a soundtrack in a way that looked cool and was easy to share with friends and family.

Looking ahead, we knew it was also important for these shows to play on any device and on any operating system—whether a desktop computer, a Pocket PC, or a mobile device. With these requirements and a little help from designers for a “cool look,” PhotonShow was born. We chose Macromedia Flash as the presentation format, due to its scalability and conveniently small file size.

Theme possibilities: the sky's the limit
PhotonShow provides users with an array of “themes” or template Macromedia Flash movies that they can easily personalize with photos, voice, and text captions, along with a soundtrack. Current themes range from a James Bond spoof, to a sliding puzzle, to elegant frames. Because the themes are simply Macromedia SWFs, the possibilities for themes are limitless. Any designer or developer who can create Macromedia Flash movies can create PhotonShow themes.
