Getting Macromedia Flash content for the Sony CLIE

We've put together a zip file of some useful and fun Flash files. If you haven't already, download the sample files from the first page of this tutorial. After decompressing the sample files, open the clie_pack folder and move the SWF files to your Memory Stick.

Sites
Not all of these sites offer direct downloads. In the next section, we'll go over how to get Macromedia Flash movies. But first, here's some places worth visiting:

Flash Enabled
Flash Enabled showcases just about anything that one could consider a "gadget" and most of the time these gadgets play Macromedia Flash. There are files in the apps section that run well on the Sony CLIÉ.

Macromedia device gallery
The Macromedia device gallery was initially created for Pocket PC devices, but most of the content on the gallery sites also plays on the CLIÉ NX Series.

Pocket PC Flash
Pocket PC Flash is another Pocket PC Flash site, but just like the Macromedia gallery most of these files play on the Sony CLIÉ as well.

Flash Kit
Flash Kit has sample source files for developers, but many of the example files are pre-compiled SWF files that can run on your CLIÉ.

Newgrounds
There's lots of "interesting" content here. These are not direct downloads, but in the next section discusses how to grab those SWFs!

And of course, there are tons of other sites out there; too many to list here. Visit www.google.com to search for them, or you download files for your Sony CLIÉ as you browse the web on your desktop. Here's how it's done:

On Windows XP, the cache is usually located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Search for *.swf with the Windows Find utility or sort by "type".

Some browsers, such as Mozilla, use somewhat cryptic names in the cache directory. Try sorting by data and/or size. You'll most likely be able to find Macromedia Flash files. Once you find them, you'll need to rename the file with a .swf extension. This process can take a little trial and error, so ensure it's worth the effort.

For Macintosh users, cache files are usually in the <User> Prefs and/or Library folders. You can also use the Finder to search for .swf files on your system.

Viewing source
If you are an HTML pro, you can view the source code of the HTML page. Select View > Source (in most browsers), then create a new HTML page with a link to the Flash file (SWF). Either right-click (Windows) and choose "Save target as …" or option-click the link (Macintosh) to download the file.

Flash Hunter
Flash2X has created an application called "Flash Hunter" that allows users to download any Macromedia Flash movie to their local system. It can run as part of Internet Explorer or as a stand-alone application. This is perhaps the simplest and easiest way to download Macromedia Flash content. For more information visit:

SWF viewer
SWF viewer allows you to extract SWF files from executable programs (EXE files). After extracting the SWF, you can load the file on your device. For more information visit:

Direct downloads
You might know of sites that have the SWF files available for download directly. If you have a wireless card for your Sony CLIÉ NX, you can tap the links and download them directly to the device. Applications like NetFront will automatically place them in the proper folder on the memory stick.

You may also consider e-mailing the files to yourself from your desktop and then retrieving them on your Sony CLIÉ. Some users have reported that this method works well.

There are many other ways, but the most common (and easiest methods) to get SWF files for your Sony CLIÉ are listed above.

Keep in mind that files created using Macromedia Flash MX (which require Macromedia Flash Player version 6 to display) will not play on mobile devices. How can you tell? If you try to open a file and it only displays a white screen, that means that the movie was published as a Macromedia Flash MX file.

It's important to consider that you may need permission from the authors to download some of the content that was intended for browser-based playback. When in doubt, e-mail the authors before downloading and using their content.

You may notice that not all Macromedia Flash files will play on your CLIÉ. You may see only a white screen or you may see a few errors here and there. In the next section, we'll go over some of the reasons.
