What Is DevNet?

Macromedia DevNet embodies our commitment to the community of Macromedia developers. Because you have chosen to put your faith in us, we have established the DevNet Subscription service to make it more convenient for you to get what you need.

The Three Tiers of DevNet
The foundation of the DevNet Subscription service is the DevNet website, which is available to all Macromedia developers. The site remains a free resource that is updated regularly and already has an archive of more than four hundred articles, code examples, tips, tutorials, and sample applications.

DevNet Subscriptions is a new annual subscription service that provides you with the powerful software, services, and assets you need to efficiently create and deliver exceptional digital experiences. There are two levels of subscription: DevNet Professional and DevNet Essentials.

DevNet Professional
DevNet Professional is the premium tier. It includes the tools, servers, product upgrades and resources you need to develop websites and applications, along with components and extensions provided in quarterly releases of the DevNet Resource Kits (DRKs). DevNet Pro subscribers get:

·
Dreamweaver MX
·
Macromedia Flash MX
·
Fireworks MX
·
FreeHand MX
·
Contribute (Windows only)
·
HomeSite+ (Windows only)
·
Development-only licenses to all supported platforms of:
·
ColdFusion MX
·
ColdFusion MX for J2EE
·
JRun
·
Macromedia Flash Remoting
·
Macromedia Flash Communication Server
·
Updates and upgrades of the above software released during your subscription term
·
Three months of exclusive access to each quarterly DevNet Resource Kit (DRK) released during your subscription term
·
Your Subscriptions subscriber portal page with immediate access to downloadable software and new releases, subscription management, and a consolidated view of all your DevNet software serial numbers
·
Membership to an elite group of Macromedia developers with special access to events, information, and offers
·
A subscriber-only hotline for priority access to Macromedia Technical Support for 2 complimentary incidents per subscription term.

DevNet Essentials
DevNet Professional isn't for everyone. DevNet Essentials is designed for those developers who want to maximize their investment in their current Macromedia MX software, by receiving a full year of quarterly DevNet Resource Kits (DRKs) containing components, extensions, tutorials, and other content—including sample application code.

The Future Value of DevNet Subscriptions
By purchasing a subscription, you're paying for the value you receive not just at the beginning of your subscription, but in the future as well. Just like with a magazine subscription, you don't know exactly what will be published but you are basing your investment on the quality and utility of the material published in the past. With DevNet Subscriptions, the value delivered over time is contained on the DevNet Resource Kits (DRKs) which are published every three months. We spend a lot of time listening to what you want as well as working with our product teams to find functionality that is of the most use to you. The components and extensions provided on the DRKs every three months may be additional, specialized functionality that will never be included as a core product feature, or, they may be pre-releases of features you'll find in the next software upgrade. While we can't tell you exactly what we will be publishing in our future DRKs, take a moment to find out what's coming on DRK Volume 3, releasing in April. And remember, only subscribers will be able to get DRK Volume 3 and every future Volume the first three months after they're released.

Why Did We Create DevNet Subscriptions?
We listened to you. You asked for a service that would make it easier to focus on developing applications, without the hassle of procuring new software every time it's released. You told us you're being asked to do a lot more—in less time and with less help—than ever before. You've had to increase your skill set to include front-end and back-end development, you've had to learn more technologies, and you have to create a broader range of applications integrating with a broader range of platforms and devices.

It takes time to keep up with the latest technical information and build new skills. Getting budget approval for the latest upgrade or resource also takes time. DevNet Subscriptions makes this process easier with a single annual fee, automatic availability of new software, a personalized web portal, and e-mail notifications of important information to keep you connected.

Getting More (and Saving Money) with DevNet Subscriptions
These days, budgets are tight. You and your manager must evaluate all technology expenses closely. You may already have some of the tools you need, but they may not be enough to achieve your goals. How can you be sure that a subscription to DevNet Professional or DevNet Essentials will suit your needs?

The benefits of signing up for Macromedia DevNet Subscriptions:

  1. Get all the included software, resources, and content immediately as it becomes available, delivered electronically and on CD.
  2. Connect to Macromedia. Receive notifications about all the newest content, upcoming events, and cutting edge technologies to stay informed.
  3. Budget for a single, predictable expenditure. Subscriptions are a convenient way to purchase your Macromedia software.
  4. Save time and money by getting everything together rather than purchasing each piece individually.

How do I purchase DevNet Subscriptions?
There are a few things to consider before purchasing:

1. Which subscription is right for you?
Choose which level is right for you. Do you need the comprehensive offering of always current development tools and server software in DevNet Professional? Or, do have the software you need and just want to extend the functionality with DevNet Essentials?

Learn more information about DevNet Subscriptions levels and features.

2. Are you upgrading?
Current Macromedia customers can upgrade to DevNet Professional from commercial versions of Macromedia Studio MX, previous studios, and one or two Macromedia products. You cannot upgrade to DevNet Professional from educational software licenses or server products.

You cannot upgrade to DevNet Essentials. This is a stand-alone subscription that complements the Macromedia software you own with a series of product add-ons and software components. It is not a product software upgrade.

See the upgrade chart.

3. How many subscriptions are you purchasing?
If you're thinking of purchasing DevNet Subscriptions for you and your team, you should consider purchasing the subscription through the Macromedia Volume Licensing Program (MVLP). Purchasing a subscription through MVLP gives you additional functionality for administering your subscription licenses across the members of your team and, depending upon how many you purchase, you may qualify for volume pricing discounts. It's possible to qualify for MVLP with as few as three full DevNet Professional subscription licenses.
