Persistence of Memory
Objective: As artists and storytellers we tried to create a strong piece that would entertain viewers as well as captivate them using surreal visuals. While having fun with the project we wanted to utilize all of the knowledge and skills we learned while adhering to traditional cinematic techniques of timing and narrative. We chose a science fiction piece to play with effects, mood, and plot, creating a futuristic, almost mysterious environment.
Tools used: From concept through delivery Adobe products were used throughout. Adobe® After Effects® was used for the entire Metropolis shot using textures from more than 175 layers designed in Adobe Photoshop® and keyed blue-screen footage. All of the machine shots were composited in After Effects utilizing elements created in Maya and Photoshop layers that textured the model. Layers composited on top of the original factory footage include the textured model, machine lights, machine shadows, factory textures, machine reflections, all wall reflections, and the transparent rotating “memory” layers. The opening title sequence was produced in After Effects, as well as the pre-shoot animatic. The logo was created in Adobe Illustrator® along with the credits and the initial machine concept designs.
