Poetry Clip: Traffic Advisories
Biography: Andreas Gaschka was born in Mainz, Germany. After graduating from school and doing community service, he stayed in Mainz and enrolled in the media design program at the University of Applied Sciences. As a student, he started experimenting with various analog and digital techniques, including stop-motion, 3D animation, video, illustration, and street art. Andreas has great interest in graphic design, motion graphics, and conceptual art. His focus is design, trying to merge together modern computer-based animation and classic typography. He is a university freshman studying design for TV broadcast, motion pictures, and games.
Objective: My course assignment was to create a type animation using poetry. Since I am not into poetry and I thought lyrics to a song were too mundane, I started looking for other kinds of texts. I decided to visualize a newscaster’s text for a traffic news session on the radio. While the newscaster reads out the advisories, all relevant information is displayed on a virtual map that takes advantage of 3D. Instead of looking at the map from straight above, an imaginary camera flies from one traffic jam to the next, showing what is happening from the most exciting angles possible.
Tools used: I used a scan as a template to manually trace the map using paths in Adobe® Photoshop® in order to gain full control of coloring. I created the type in Illustrator and animated it using Adobe After Effects®. After Effects was also used to composite the 3D animations and create the intro and outro.
