Interactive Design: Finalist

Sam Smelter

University of Wisconsin-Stout

Minnesota State Park Interactive Website

Biography: Sam Smelter is from Minnesota but traveled to Wisconsin for his education. He graduated with a BFA in Multimedia Design from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in May 2006. For Sam, design is a way of making communication more effective. Information design and interactive design are his main interests. A continuing goal is to create more efficient connections between users and information, and allow the user control over viewing that information. Sam's hope is that, indirectly, this will help create a more productive and graphically literate society, while developing awareness of the need for design.

Objective: The purpose of this website is to utilize Macromedia® Flash® from Adobe as a tool to present information in a unique and interactive way. This project contains information about 70 state parks in Minnesota that is accessed through an interactive interface. It is a practice in information design as well as interaction design.

Tools used: Adobe® Photoshop® and Illustrator® were used to create the graphic elements of the interface. Flash and Macromedia Dreamweaver® were used to create the interactivity and to adjust the HTML file.
