Artist's Statement:
Who is Isabel?
Isabel is a 102-year-old woman I met in the Greenwich Village Nursing Home. She has lived in New York City her entire life. Through our meetings, Isabel told me many stories from her life, from growing up in Brooklyn, to her travels around the world, to her career as an elementary school teacher. I took these true stories and compiled them into a children's book entitled "Isabel," along with accompanying complementary products. This was for a book publishing class in which our assignment was to create a book, book jacket and ancillary products.
I created all artwork by hand through a watercolor and collage technique and brought them into Photoshop to manipulate the color. I also wrote all copy on all products.
BOOK JACKET
Book Jacket for "Isabel" children's book
NOTE CARDS
Note cards featuring illustrations from the book, a back cover colophon describing the image, and an accompanying "Isabelisms."
JOURNAL
Spiral bound journal held together with a large orange rubber band. Isabel "pops-up" throughout the journal to give writing topics for the user.
