Elements
Artist's Statement: During my last semester at Art Center while studying motion design, I was also taking a class in "Dharma Art." This class deals with a buddhistic view of art and representation. The final assignment was to present the traditional five universal elements, which is normally accomplished by cooking and serving a five-course meal for a friend. Being fascinated by my initiation to After Effects® and using motion in my work, and not wanting to cook, I decided to animate the elements, using their traditional colors, shapes and actions, and have them accompanied with music, which I felt helped portray their characters.
They are in order of appearance:
- SPACE, as a white circle and/or star, with no action
- FIRE, as a red crescent. As an element, it attracts and is involved with surface
- WATER, a blue or white circle clarifies
- EARTH, a yellow square. This element is concerned with layering or building up
- AIR, is a green triangle. Destruction and omnipresence are actions related to this element
