What was the first thing you photographed?
“The first thing I ever photographed was a cat in a hallway at Syracuse University when I was a sophomore in college. I remember borrowing my buddy’s camera and how fascinating it was to hear the first click of the shutter.”
Who was the first famous person you met?
"The first famous person I remember photographing was Richard Nixon on the streets of New York City while I was on assignment for UPI."
What was your first camera and how old were you when you got it?
"My first junior camera was a Brownie when I was ten years old but the first camera I used in school was my dad’s Beauty Lite III with a 40mm lens, made by the Beauty Camera Company."
Do you shoot with digital cameras?
“I shoot with a variety of film and digital cameras. My first digital assignment was for Nikon using a Coolpix 990 digital camera while photographing a massive bodybuilder while holding bunches of newborn babies. I wanted to contrast his toughness and his muscles with all of the soft new skin of the babies.”
What is your favorite picture and why?
“My favorite picture of all time is a shot that I made of my daughter Caitlin when she was seven months old and was just trying to walk. I love her and I love her spirit and I remember that she was backlit on the floor trying so hard to get up and walk. She looked very beautiful and it made a beautiful photograph.”
What is the most exciting thing you've ever done?
“The most exciting thing I have ever done in photography was climbing to the top of the Empire State Building to photograph the man that is responsible for changing the warning light on the top of the antenna. I climbed up the antenna four different times to make the picture.”
Do you photograph any sports teams?
“I generally don’t shoot sports teams but I do photograph individual people including the players and coaches quite a bit. I love to show them as human beings while capturing the different sides of their personalities and lives.”
What is your favorite thing to photograph and why?
“I love photographing people. I’m a people photographer. It doesn’t really matter what they are doing as long as it is interesting. I enjoy studying them and watching them and looking for great photographic moments as they simply do different things. I’m a very curious person and interested in people and what they are doing.”
Where is the most interesting place that you've traveled?
“Russia. Russia is a beautiful and powerful and historical place and it offers so many different places of interest to capture images. There are so many unusual places around Moscow and places like Siberia where it is dark most of the winter."
Who or what inspired you to become a photographer?
“People inspire me to make pictures. I love photography them and the world they live in. Photography offers you a front row seat to see and capture the world.”
What is your favorite part of photography?
“I would say going new places and meeting new people. The job is never the same, day to day, and it gets you out into the world. It's the most exciting career I could ever imagine.”
