Brian Cairns teaches in the Department of Visual Communication at the Glasgow School of Art. He combines teaching with an internationally acclaimed design practice for clients such as Ridley Scott Associates, Hyatt, United Airlines, Hewlett Packard, Warner Records, Herman Miller, The New York Times, George Lucas Foundation, and American Express.
Cairns studied visual communication at the Glasgow School of Art from 1982 to 1987 and completed a postgraduate program in Learning and Teaching in Art & Design at the University of the Arts, London, in 2006. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
His work is regularly featured in design publications including Communication Arts, Creative Review, Grafik, and Print. Cairns has won numerous distinguished awards and is included in design publications such as D&AD, American Illustration, and Art Directors Club. In 2004, the Society of Illustrators of New York awarded him a Gold Medal Award. His work is featured in the design curriculum for New South Wales, Australia.
