"Every cloud has a silver lining."
Matthijs Clasener teaches interactive design, animation, and film and video in the Media Design/Interactive Department at Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam. Clasener started as an instructor at the school in 2002, and since then has become involved in developing texts for different courses. Students in the Interactive Department learn the basics of programming with ActionScript®, and some advance to larger projects using Adobe Flash technology. Students in Clasener's animation classes also learn Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects®, and Encore®.
In 2009, the Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam first entered student projects in the EUROPRIX Multimedia Awards, including a project in game design and two projects in animation. All these projects were awarded the Quality Seal. It’s now standard to enter every project in this competition and in the Adobe Design Achievement Awards.
Part of Clasener's work at Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam includes organizing field trips to London for second-year students. They visit the BBC studios and several museums, and attend an acting workshop. Clasener believes that acting, creating characters, writing scripts, and making movies are all important parts of film students' education.
Team building is important to Clasener as well. Together with Dusty Parrish he developed the Global Video Battle, which was a great success.
Clasener is proud to be an Adobe Education Leader. He has initiated monthly online meetings with other European AELs as a way to build community.
