Richard Cornez primarily teaches mathematics at the University of Redlands, but has a strong interest in computer science pedagogy. He earned a PhD in Probability Theory at the University of New Mexico. His experience in teaching an initial programming course with various languages inspired his collaboration as coauthor of the textbook An Introduction to Programming with ActionScript 3.0, published by Jones and Bartlett Learning. The impetus for this text was the authors' first experience designing and teaching a CS0 course using Flash. They wanted to show students the spectacular advantages to be gained in enabling interactivity, through a knowledge of ActionScript3.0. These first steps led to a full-fledged effort to use ActionScript3.0 as the first language in an introductory programming class.
Additionally, Richard has developed several animated simulations to demonstrate various concepts in probability and statistics using Flash and ActionScript3.0.
