David Basulto is the media arts and animation instructor at award-winning San Marino High School in Southern California. The program is part of the Los Angeles County Regional Occupational Program (LACOROP). In his first three years of teaching, his students have won Silver and Bronze medals in the LACOROP annual competition.
Basulto brings years of production and post-production experience to his classroom from a successful career producing feature films and television for firms like Icon Entertainment and Lifetime Television. His films have won awards at many film festivals, including the Toronto Film Festival. After seeing the shift to digital, he dove head first into learning as many tools as possible and fell in love with the Adobe workflow.
Basulto loves teaching new students the programs and creates numerous tutorials. His classroom includes 14 Mac Pro workstations with dual monitors all running Adobe® Creative Suite® 6 Production Premium. His students learn to shoot films with cameras like Canon DSLR and broadcast cameras, RED, and even their iPhone and iPad cameras. The common workflow for media students is to draft a script in Adobe Story, create the assets, ingest them through Adobe Prelude™, and then edit in Adobe Premiere® Pro. Students love how intuitive all the applications are and master them quickly. Animation students enjoy learning how to create magic using Adobe After Effects® CS6 and Cinema 4D. Since the programs work extremely well together, students are empowered to be as creative as possible.
Outside the classroom, Basulto is an avid reviewer and influencer in the post-production community. He writes for Post Magazine and his own site Filmmaking Central. He is an Adobe Certified Instructor in Adobe Premiere Pro and enjoys showing everyone its power and ease, both those new to editing and those using other products.
