Mark Murray has served as coordinator of technology systems for the Arlington Independent School District since 1996. Before then, he taught photography at Lamar High School and was among the first classroom teachers to involve students in Adobe® Photoshop® software and digital imaging technology. In addition to implementing and managing special projects for the district, he continues to teach journalism workshops that feature Adobe Photoshop and InDesign® software. He also supports and trains teachers in their use of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat®, and Photoshop Lightroom® software.
Since the mid-1980s, Murray has served as president and now executive director of the Association of Texas Photography Instructors (ATPI). He also comanages the Photo Imaging Education Association (PIEA), an organization of middle school, high school, and college teachers from nine countries that sponsors perhaps the largest student-faculty contest in the world.
Murray teaches workshops at conferences nationwide, including the annual national journalism conferences sponsored by the Journalism Education Association (JEA) and the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA). He has received a Gold Key (Columbia Scholastic Press Association), a Pioneer Award (NSPA), a Medal of Merit (JEA), and the Star of Texas award (ATPI; its highest honor). Murray has also been named a Trailblazer (Texas Association of Journalism Educators) and one of 75 Texas Legends of Scholastic Journalism (Interscholastic League Press Conference in Texas).
