Critical Path Analysis

Critical path analysis or critical path method is a technique used to predict project duration and, therefore, is useful for both project scheduling and resource planning. It involves the analysis of each project task and how dependent that task is on other tasks within the project. The outcome of this analysis is the identification of those tasks dependent upon one another; when those task times are added together, one can predict the longest time necessary to complete the project (also known as the critical path). The task dependency could be a factor of time or resources or some other factor(s). This process is essential when estimating the overall project duration. It is important to know which tasks can happen independently of one another and which tasks must be done in a certain sequence.

The outcome of the critical path analysis should be carefully reviewed and should receive special attention by the project manager and those project team members involved in tasks that are part of the critical path.
