Project Life Cycle

The project life cycle involves identifying the project phases related to the needs of the organization(s) involved in the overall project. There are typically four primary phases of a project life cycle. These stages are sequential and can be broken down into smaller, more manageable pieces. Milestones are used to identify progress throughout the various phases of the project life cycle; they essentially mark the completion of a group of related tasks.

Generic terms used to describe the most basic phases of the project life cycle are:

  • Concept identification: the identification and definition of the overall project concept
  • Project development: the verification of the overall project concept and the establishment of an implementation plan
  • Project implementation: the actual carrying out of the project implementation plan
  • Project close-out: the aspects of the project that relate to product completion, final documentation, and final submission of the project to the appropriate individuals
