Selecting a connection method

The purpose of this dialog box is to select a connection method for you or your users and to provide required information about your connection.

The connection method indicates how you or your users connect to the website and transfer new and updated files between Contribute and the website. In general, users working in your organization's offices use a local or network connection; users working remotely may need to use FTP or SFTP to transfer files to the web server.

To specify a connection method:

1. Select one of the following options from the pop-up menu:
   • Local/Network
   • FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
   • SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol)
   • WebDAV
2. Complete the dialog box:
   • If you select Local/Network, enter the network path of the web server and the folder (directory) that contain the website's files.

   The network path is not a path to the location where files will be stored locally; it's a path to the location of the files on the web server. If you haven't created a website root folder, you can use the default website root folder on the server. (The default varies between servers.)

   Tip: You can type the path directly in the text box, but using the Browse button to browse the web server ensures that the path is accurate. The network path for a Windows network always starts with two back slashes (\\) rather than with a drive letter.

   • If you select FTP or SFTP, you must provide the name of the server. For more information, see Providing FTP or SFTP information.

   Note: It is recommended that you require users to use their own FTP or s FTP account information. Make sure users understand how to enter their own login information--many users don't understand that FTP or SFTP login information is different from their network login information. It's a good idea that your FTP, SFTP, or WedDAV accounts tied to your user directory service so that users do not have to know or remember another password

   • If you select WebDAV, you must provide the WebDAV URL.For more information, see Providing WebDAV information.
