MACROMEDIA INTRODUCES COLDFUSION MX
New version runs on Java platform and Microsoft .NET Framework, optimized for XML, web services, and rich Internet applications

San Francisco—April 29, 2002—Macromedia, Inc. (Nasdaq: MACR) today announced Macromedia ColdFusion MX, the rapid server scripting environment for creating rich Internet applications. Macromedia ColdFusion MX, previously code-named "Neo," brings the proven ease of use and productivity of ColdFusion to the highly scalable, standards-based Java technology architecture. ColdFusion MX offers innovations for creating rich Internet applications and working with XML, web services, and the Microsoft .NET Framework. A preview release of Macromedia ColdFusion MX is immediately available at www.macromedia.com/go/cfmxdl/.

"ColdFusion MX defines a new role for ColdFusion in the enterprise. With ColdFusion MX, we're making it incredibly easy for mainstream developers to create rich Internet applications and use XML and web services," said Jeremy Allaire, chief technology officer, Macromedia. "The new standards-based architecture and breakthrough ease of use for web services mean customers can harness the proven productivity of ColdFusion to enhance the return on their investments in Java and .NET Framework infrastructures."

ColdFusion MX is built on a breakthrough new architecture that delivers the scalability, reliability, and power of the Java platform without the complexity. Customers can deploy ColdFusion MX as a standalone server or on top of Java application servers, such as IBM WebSphere Application Server (see separate partnership announcement) and Sun ONE Application Server (see separate partnership announcement). As a result, organizations can use the proven productivity of ColdFusion to accelerate development projects with confidence that their applications can run on the industry's most powerful infrastructure. ColdFusion MX has already been embraced by Macromedia Alliance partners (see partner quote sheet). For details of new features in ColdFusion MX, visit www.macromedia.com/go/cfmxnew/.

"With its push for rich Internet applications and support for leading industry technologies in ColdFusion MX, Macromedia is taking the lead in enabling rapid, robust server-side development," said Gordon Benett, senior research analyst, Internet infrastructure, Aberdeen. "Macromedia ColdFusion MX builds on the openness of the standards-based J2EE architecture, while enhancing developer productivity through tag-based support for XML, components, and web services."

UPS, which has beta tested ColdFusion MX, has one of the world's largest intranet infrastructures supporting more than 85,000 users worldwide. Every facet of the company's internal workings has come to rely on the internal web to provide information in the quickest possible fashion.

"UPS relies on ColdFusion for the hundreds of global intranet applications that enhance our business every day," said Al Carvalho, UPS intranet systems manager. "The migration to ColdFusion MX was very smooth and introduces benefits such as XML and ColdFusion Components to our development platform. Macromedia Flash Remoting is an area that interests us for future applications. We think that Macromedia Flash Player, combined with the power of the UPS server infrastructure, shows promise for a better user experience."

Macromedia Dreamweaver MX (see separate release) offers complete support for ColdFusion MX features including enhanced code editing and development capabilities, integrated debugging, and powerful visual layout and prototyping. The comprehensive integration between ColdFusion MX and Dreamweaver MX offers developers unprecedented productivity in building ColdFusion applications.

Using the revolutionary new ColdFusion Components capability of ColdFusion MX, developers can easily encapsulate and reuse code to create well-structured applications that can be automatically accessed as web services or as remote services for Macromedia Flash clients using the integrated Macromedia Flash Remoting service.

The new Macromedia Flash Remoting enables ColdFusion developers to easily deliver remote services to Macromedia Flash clients. Using ColdFusion Components or the new support for server-side ActionScript, developers familiar with ColdFusion or Macromedia Flash can easily create applications that combine the responsiveness and functionality of client/server applications with the reach and low cost deployment of the Internet. Included as a native service within ColdFusion MX, Macromedia Flash Remoting also supports connecting Macromedia Flash Player clients directly to both the Microsoft .NET Framework and J2EE components.

Macromedia ColdFusion MX is an integral member of the new Macromedia MX product family which also includes Macromedia Flash MX and Dreamweaver MX. The Macromedia MX product family provides the best way to create and deploy rich Internet applications across leading platforms and devices.
