San Francisco, CaliforniaJanuary 17, 2002Macromedia,
Inc., (NASDAQ: MACR) today announced the immediate
availability of an update to Macromedia
Director 8.5 Shockwave Studio, the authoring software
used to create Shockwave content. In addition, a native
Mac OS X version of the widely distributed Macromedia
Shockwave Player will be available later this
month. The free update to the studio and existing
players adds Windows XP compatibility and anti-aliasing
support for visually rich 3D imaging. The free studio
updates can be downloaded immediately from www.macromedia.com/go/dir851.
"With the addition of powerful new anti-aliasing
support in Director and a native Shockwave Player
for Mac OS X, Macromedia is clearly in touch with
the needs of its developers. These powerful new tools
are helping us build the most interactive e-learning
courseware available," said Scott Kingsley, president
of Periscope3, a leading e-learning provider in the
IT training market. "Shockwave content is helping
us lead the way in delivering interactive 3D learning
experiences online, and these new updates will make
the content richer, ensuring it reaches even more
people."
Macromedia is delivering a new feature for Director
8.5 with this update, the inclusion of both hardware
and software-based anti-aliasing support. Anti-aliasing
improves the visual quality of 3D objects by adjusting
the pixels to eliminate "jaggies" and soften
the contrast between objects for a smoother look.
Anti-aliasing support is also included in the new
version of the Shockwave Player.
Macromedia is committed to bringing its authoring
and player products to Mac OS X, and OS X users will
be able to natively experience sophisticated 3D and
rich media content with Macromedia Shockwave Player.

The player, which is installed on 65 percent of web
desktops, enables a clear majority of online users
to experience interactive,
magnetic web content. 270 million web users already
have Shockwave Player installed and more than 300,000
are installing the 3D-enhanced Shockwave Player daily.
