Adobe Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) Trust Hierarchy

Adobe Systems has created a high-assurance self-signed root certificate authority. This certificate authority was developed using security industry best practices, including an audit of the certificate generation and issuance process. Adobe's root certificate authority is used to sign subordinate certificate authorities that are critical to Adobe's partners' products, services, and business models.

Certified Document Services (CDS) is one of the services enabled by the Adobe PKI trust hierarchy. CDS enables document authors to sign Portable Document Format (PDF) files, using standard digital certificates, which automatically validate when authors are using free Adobe® Reader® software. No additional client software or configuration is required.

Adobe's PKI trust hierarchy is governed by the Certificate Policy (PDF:104K) and the Certification Practice Statement (PDF:107K). The use of the Adobe root certificate to create CDS certificate authority and other certificates is compliant with the Adobe root certificate authority's Certificate Policy and Certification Practice Statement.
