Compositing photos using clipping paths
page: 1 2 3 4
A clipping path is a drawn vector outline that acts as a mask to hide unwanted parts of a photograph or any other object. With InDesign® you have the flexibility to create a clipping path from an image that contains paths, alpha channels, a white background, or a transparent background. In this tip, we'll look at how to use an image with a white background and an image with a transparent background to create clipping paths.
Creating a clipping path from an image with a white background
Use InDesign's Detect Edges option of the Clipping Path command to remove a solid white background from an image. This image was saved in Adobe Photoshop without any paths or alpha channels.
1. Place and select the image.
Select File > Place, locate the image with the white background, and place it in your document. Then use the selection tool to select the image.
Tip: To set the image display to full resolution (to see more detail), click the image and hold down the Control key (MacOS) or right-click the image (Windows). Then choose Display > Full Resolution from the context menu.
