What is the Macromedia Flash Media Server?

Macromedia Flash Media Server 2 software offers the unique combination of traditional streaming media capabilities and a flexible development environment for creating and delivering innovative, interactive media applications to the broadest possible audience.  The product is sever based software which runs media applications developed for it with the Flash authoring tool.  Playback of these media applications occurs via Flash Player 6 or higher.

Will I have to buy a new development tool to author for Macromedia Flash Media Server?

To develop media applications for Flash Media Server you'll only need the Macromedia Flash authoring tool - and its familiar authoring methods.

Will I need to buy Macromedia Flex, ColdFusion, or JRun to use Macromedia Flash Media Server?

No. The Macromedia Flash Media Server operates as a stand-alone server, but can integrate with Macromedia Flex, ColdFusion, JRun, and other web applications in order to provide additional functionality.

When is Macromedia Flash Media Server 2 available and where can I purchase it?

Macromedia announced availability of the Macromedia Flash Media Server 2 on November 15, 2005. The free Developer Edition is available for download on macromedia.com. The Professional Edition is available for purchase from Authorized Macromedia Resellers and on the Macromedia Online Store.

What should I purchase?

A number of common development- and deployment-usage scenarios are listed below, along with recommendations on which edition(s) should be used.

Develop and test a Macromedia Flash Media Server application; deploy that application from a third-party ISP/host. Use the Developer Edition to create your applications on your development machine, and buy a Macromedia Flash Media Server hosting package with one of our hosting partners to deploy your application. If your application is expected to handle more than a few simultaneous users, purchase the Professional Edition to test your application. You can also test your application with your ISP account.

Can I try Macromedia Flash Media Server before I buy it?

A free Developer Edition of Macromedia Flash Media Server is available for download today. The Developer Edition offers all the features found in the Professional Edition, but has capacity limitations and licensing limitations that prevent application deployment.

I purchased the Professional Edition of Macromedia Flash Communication Server MX 1.5. Am I entitled to a free upgrade to Flash Media Server 2?

Customers who purchased the Professional Edition of the Macromedia Flash Communication Server MX version 1.5 with software subscription and still have a valid software subscription are entitled to a free upgrade to Flash Media Server 2 per their subscription. Macromedia will contact you directly via email with instructions on how to download the latest version within 60 days of the release of Flash Media Server 2.

Do you offer educational pricing for Flash Media Server?

The Education version of Flash Media Server is available at a discounted price to qualified educational end-users. Please visit the Macromedia Education Store to learn more about our special prices for students and teachers.

Can I host Flash Media Server for customers?

The EULA prohibits companies from offering hosted services for Flash Media Server with the Origin and Edge licenses. If you are an ISP or CDN who would like to host Flash Media Server applications you can do this with the Flash Media Server Professional Edition. If you are a Content Delivery network for video streaming to your customers with the Origin and Edge editions, please visit Flash Video Streaming Service and contact your Macromedia Sales Representative for more information.
