Macromedia Flash Player Update mechanism

  • Overview:
This release of Macromedia Flash Player offers a new capability to both notify users about the availability of new versions and install the latest version of the Flash Player. The update mechanism is designed to provide Flash Player users with an easy and convenient mechanism to update their software in a timely and convenient manner. This notification and update mechanism will be initially available for users running on the Microsoft Windows platforms (98/ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP) with Internet Explorer only. The update capability will be available for the web players (when hosted by a browser). The debugging and standalone players will not offer this new capability.
  • Functional Description:
The update process includes two primary capabilities; a notification tool and an updating system.
    • The notification tool provides a non-intrusive means to inform the user that a new version of the Flash Player is now available. On Window 2000 and XP systems, the notification leverages pop-up bubbles linked to system tray icons.
    • The update system is initiated when the user chooses to proceed with the download and install. In this case, an executable installer is downloaded from macromedia.com using a secure connection. Once the download has completed, the installer is executed. The installer delivers the new version of the Flash Player.
  • Frequency and User Control:
    • This new notification and update system checks Macromedia servers every 30 days. This is the default duration which can be reset by the user using setting options.
    • If a new version of the Player is available, then the user will be notified via balloon dialog box (Windows 2000 and XP), 5 minutes after they have viewed any Flash content. A user can close the balloon dialog box and will receive no additional notification and will reset to the default period.
    • The bubble will reappear 3 additional times with a 15 minute interval. After the fourth notification, the update process terminates under the assumption that the user has chosen not to proceed.
    • When a user clicks on either the balloon or icon they are presented with a dialog box with 3 choices.
      • Install now" which initiates the download process.
      • "Remind me later" which terminates the process and resets the notification to the default period.
      • “Settings” which brings the user to the Settings Manager on Macromedia.com where they can configure their options to not be notified or to change the notification frequency from the default 30 days to 7 or 14 days .
  • Summary:
The new Macromedia Flash Player update service is intended to provide users with a simple, convenient, and secure mechanism to update their Macromedia Flash Player on a timely basis. The process was designed to offer an intuitive and non-intrusive mechanism is designed not to interrupt the user and prevent rebooting. It provides the user with the control to not participate in this notification and update mechanism.
