Illustrator CC / FAQ

Product information
When will the new CC apps and Creative Cloud features announced May 2013 be available?

The new CC apps, such as Photoshop CC and Illustrator CC, and Creative Cloud features, such as Sync Settings, desktop notifications, integration with Behance, and desktop notifications, will be available exclusively to Creative Cloud members in June.

For more information see www.adobe.com/creativecloud.

What is Illustrator® CC and who is it for?

Illustrator CC is the industry-standard vector graphics software used worldwide by designers of all types who want to create digital graphics, illustrations, and typography for all kinds of media: print, web, interactive, video, and mobile.

What are vector graphics and why are they important?

Vector graphics are one of the two most commonly used graphic formats in design, the other being bitmap (or raster) graphics. Vector graphics, like those created with Illustrator, are "resolution independent," which means they can be resized infinitely with no loss of quality. For example, the same logo design created with Illustrator can be used on a business card or an outdoor billboard, maintaining the accuracy and detail of the original design.

Where can I learn more about new features?

Find out more about new features in Illustrator CC, and visit Illustrator Help for a comprehensive list of product resources. The Creative Cloud™ Training library includes a growing collection of tutorials from Adobe and industry-leading partners.

What are the new touch-enabled features in Illustrator CC, and how can they be used?

Illustrator CC brings multitouch capability to the new Touch Type tool and the Free Transform tool. These touch capabilities provide new ways to work with natural, intuitive gestures right on the screen when using display devices that support multitouch, such as the Wacom Cintiq 24HD touch display or Windows® 8 touchscreen devices.

Multitouch devices are not required to use these tools; they can also be used with a mouse, a tablet and stylus, or a trackpad.

Does Illustrator CC still support 32-bit operating systems?

Illustrator CC supports both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems, but only 64-bit systems for Mac OS. Refer to the Illustrator CC tech specs to make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements.

What are the hardware recommendations to make Illustrator CC run faster?

See the Illustrator CC tech specs, which provide the minimum requirements needed. With native 64-bit support, Illustrator CC can take full advantage of the available RAM on your system. Many users will see additional performance gains as they add more RAM, with 8GB of RAM being a good baseline, particularly if you run multiple applications simultaneously.

Will my existing plug-ins work with Illustrator CC?

Plug-ins designed for earlier versions of Illustrator will not work with Illustrator CC and must be updated. Vendors of the more popular plug-ins have been working to make new versions available as quickly as possible. For a list of available plug-ins, visit the plug-ins page. For more information, contact the plug-in manufacturer directly.

Why are Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) fonts not included in the file packaging feature?

CJK fonts are not included in the Package folder created with the Package files feature In Illustrator CC because of geographic licensing restrictions for those fonts. This is also the case with the same feature in Adobe® InDesign® CC.

I just launched Illustrator CC and the user interface is a dark gray. Can I change this back to the light gray UI from earlier Illustrator versions?

The darker UI in Illustrator CC is set by default to match other Adobe professional products like Photoshop®, InDesign, and Adobe Premiere® Pro. You can easily change the brightness in the Preferences dialog box: Choose Edit > Preferences > User Interface (Windows) or Illustrator > Preferences > User Interface (Mac OS).

Illustrator CC contains the Pantone Plus Series color libraries. Are there any issues with opening my legacy Illustrator files that use older Pantone colors?

The Pantone Plus Series is an enhancement and replacement of the Pantone Matching System. The Plus Series preserves all the current solid colors of the Pantone Matching System while adding new colors. When working with files created with Illustrator versions earlier than CS6, the file will use whatever Pantone color values are available in the document's Swatches panel, even in the absence of the older Pantone libraries.

However, there may be issues working with PSD and TIFF files containing spot channels from older Pantone libraries, when you either directly open the files or open an Illustrator document that contains links to the files. For details, see the related Knowledgebase article.

I'm having problems with Illustrator CC; where can I get assistance?

First, make sure you have the latest software updates: In Illustrator, from the main menu, choose Help > Updates, and then follow the instructions. If you've installed the latest update and are still experiencing issues, visit the Illustrator forums. If you need one-on-one help, visit our Contact Support and Customer Service page.
