Macromedia Xtra extensions are "plug-in" code modules that
let users add specialized capabilities and extended functionality
to Macromedia products. When placed in an application's Xtra
extensions folder, Xtra extensions integrate their commands,
palettes, and functionality into the application. In addition,
Xtra extensions provided by Macromedia allow you to use other
third party "plug-in" types and filters in Macromedia applications.
Choose a Macromedia product to see the Xtra extensions available
for that product: Director
Shockwave Studio or Authorware.
Xtra extensions are based on the Macromedia
Open Architecture (MOA), which provides a common extension
mechanism for Macromedia and third-party developers to enhance
the capabilities of Macromedia products. Because Macromedia
is incorporating MOA into all of its applications, developers
will find it easy to develop Xtra extensions that work not
only cross-platform (Windows, MacOS, etc.) but across multiple
Macromedia products. For example, Transition Xtra extensions
work in both Director and Authorware, and the same MIX image
import Xtra extensions work across the products in the FreeHand
Graphics Studio.
If you are interested in developing your own Xtra extensions,
visit the Xtra extensions
developer support area, where you can also submit
Xtra extensions that you have already developed to add
to these lists.
