Green Dragon Office is four designers—Lorraine Wild, Victoria Lam, Robert Ruehlman, and Stuart Smith—working in an old Spanish-style bungalow in the heart of Los Angleles. We design all sorts of things, but most of our practice is based on the design of books: museum catalogs, artists’ books, architects’ monographs, and other interesting and complicated publications where the visual nature of the subject has to be communicated typographically. Because we work on books about a wide range of topics, historical and contemporary, that already have strong visual styles, what we try to do is to design typography that supports the subject matter without imitating it or creating a caricature. To that end we use a pretty diverse selection of type faces; and in combination with thoughtful design and printing and binding, we make books that are meant to be of interest for years to come.
