Multiple grids were used for two major parts of the book. The first grid was used for the large essay section. It is a three-column grid influenced by a newspaper that accommodates a large amount of type and provides flexibility for multiple sizes and proportions of comic strips and details.
The second, more traditional single-column text grid was used for the rest of the essay sections of the book. This part of the book is made up of a series of shorter essays with less text and fewer images. Making the illustrations as large as possible was another consideration in devising these grids. This allows for the unique styles of the different authors to be viewed at maximum size.
