Editing video when you’re simultaneously creating visual effects or motion graphics can cause many intermediate renders. For example, an animation may be refined in Adobe After Effects software, previewed in the overall edit in Adobe Premiere® Pro software, and then refined a dozen times more before it’s considered final. Typically, each refinement triggers a series of steps necessary to update the edit, and these steps add up to long delays. Adobe Production Studio radically improves this process through the new Adobe Dynamic Link feature.

With Dynamic Link, you can make changes to your design in After Effects, and quickly shift back to Adobe Premiere Pro or Adobe Encore® DVD to preview the results—without rendering. If the clients standing over your shoulder suddenly notice that a trademark is required with their logo animation, or if they wish to experiment with the color of an animated background, you can show them the changes instantly. In this tutorial, we’ll use Dynamic Link to open an After Effects composition in Adobe Premiere Pro, edit the composition in After Effects, and then view the result in Adobe Premiere Pro—without rendering.

The files used in this tutorial are on Disc 2 of the Total Training™ Video Workshop included with Adobe Production Studio. Depending on the television standard for your region, copy either the NTSC or PAL folder from the Adobe Production Studio folder to your desktop. Alternatively, you can follow along using your own files. You’ll need to start an Adobe Premiere Pro project, and you’ll need at least one video clip and one After Effects project (*.aep file) that contains a composition.

Dynamic Link is ideal for animating titles in After Effects and then viewing them in Adobe Premiere Pro before committing to a render.
