Save As XML Plug-In for Macintosh (beta 2)

Adobe Acrobat 5.0 further supports Network Publishing by making information available over a broad range of hardware and software. The Save As XML Plug-In for Acrobat 5.0 allows users to save time by repurposing content. Users can now easily save content into XML, HTML, XHTML or plain text from a tagged Adobe PDF file and place that content in other tools to reuse the information. A tagged Adobe PDF file can be generated from Microsoft Office 2000, from PageMaker 7.0, by using the Acrobat 5.0 Web Capture feature to convert a website to Adobe PDF, by using the Make Accessible Plug-In, or by sending PostScript+pdfmark through Acrobat Distiller. The structure which the creating program embeds in the PDF file will come back out in the XML or HTML generated by the Save As XML Plug-In.

Different output formats available:
- XML-1.00 without styling
- HTML-4.01 with CSS-1.00
- HTML-3.20 Accessible
- HTML-3.20 without CSS
- XHTML-1.00 with CSS-1.00
- Text-only
These formats are added to the File>SaveAs dialog of Acrobat 5.0, so that you can save time by repurposing Adobe PDF content, without retyping text or re-creating images.

Benefits of Save As XML Plug-In output:
- use Adobe PDF content in XML business processes
- create Accessibile HTML from Adobe PDF files
- repurpose Adobe PDF files to HTML and XHTML pages with Cascading Style Sheets
- customize XML schemas by modifying Mapping Table templates

Additional documentation:
Refer to DeveloperInfo.pdf for additional information about converting Adobe PDF documents to XML and HTML. DeveloperInfo.pdf is installed with the Save As XML Plug-In beta release, in the Acrobat:Plugins:SaveAsXML:DeveloperInfo folder. It is also available online

Limitations/Known Issues
- pre-release software: Adobe will not provide any technical support for this version of the Save As XML Plug-In. To report problems, send an email message to "acrobatsaveas@adobe.com"; Adobe will not respond to problem reports unless additional information is required.

- Tagged Adobe PDF: The Save As XML Plug-In supports tagged Adobe PDF files. Untagged PDF files cannot be converted. Existing, untagged Adobe PDF files can be converted with the MakeAccessible Plug-in for Windows versions of Acrobat 5.0. A Macintosh version of the MakeAccessible Plug-in has not been released. To download the Windows plug-in, see:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/88de.htm. A tagged Adobe PDF file can be generated from Microsoft Office 2000 applications (using the PDFMaker macro installed with Windows versions of Acrobat 5.0). A Macintosh version of the PDFMaker macro has not been released.

- Performance: Converting lengthy documents can take a long time.

- Some large/complex tagged PDF files created by Web Capture may hang or crash Acrobat 5 when they are converted using this pre-release SaveAsXML Plug-in.
