This archive contains an updated version of the Microsoft Word 97 Import Filter which was previously available between July 30, 1997 and January 13, 1998. Adobe recommends that you download and install this updated version, which provides additional features or resolves problems as described below.
The Microsoft Word 97 import filter lets you import Word 97 (Word 8.0) documents into Adobe PageMaker 6.5 or later publications. This filter update includes the following enhancements not available with versions 1.0 (MacOS) and 1.1 (Windows) of the Word 97 filter:
The following problem has been resolved since January 13, 1998:
-- In version 1.3, a Word 97 document could not be placed if it contained a WordArt graphic. In version 1.4, the file can be placed but the WordArt graphic is not imported.
The following features are new since December 19, 1997:
-- Adds support for graphics stored as Portable Network Graphic (PNG) files, enabling PageMaker to import Office 97 clipart graphics. Word 97 stores imported Office 97 clipart graphics as PNG files. In previous versions of the Word 97 filter, the filter imported the text without the graphics. Version 1.4 of the filter now imports Office 97 graphics, if the PNG import filter is installed on your computer. (The PNG import filter for Adobe PageMaker 6.5 is available for free from the Adobe Web site, www.adobe.com.)
-- Imports inline graphics created in all six graphics formats available in Word 97 documents (PNG, JPEG, EMF, WMF, PICT, and BMP), if those graphics filters are installed on your computer. Previously, the filter imported the documents that contained inline graphics, but the graphics did not appear in the imported text. Version 1.4 of the filter now imports inline graphics. Note that graphics positioned using the Float Over Text option in Word 97 import at the beginning of the story; graphics anchored at the character level import at the correct character position.
-- Imports text in text boxes created with the Word 97 Insert > Text Box command. The text imports at the beginning of the story, followed by floating graphics and the remaining text in the document. Multiple text boxes are separated by an extra paragraph return. Text in text boxes imports with the same character and paragraph formatting as regular document text.
