Adobe Illustrator 8.0 Update for International English resolves a problem that occurs when an International English version of Adobe Illustrator 8.0 application is installed on certain international versions of Mac OS. The problem causes Illustrator to return the error, "Adobe Illustrator cannot run," when you start it after October 31, 1998.
This problem does not occur on North American versions of Mac OS (i.e., United States, French Canadian, Canada Point, or Canada Comma).
Verify you have a CD-ROM that is known to be affected by this problem by checking the part number on the CD. The part number is the last line of text in the copyright section on the front of the CD. Part numbers affected are:
You can also confirm whether your application is affected by this problem if the serial number displayed in the Adobe Illustrator 8.0 splash screen begins with "EXX."

Adobe Illustrator 8.0 for Mac OS
To update Illustrator 8.0:
1. Quit Adobe Illustrator 8.0
2. Make a backup copy of the Adobe Illustrator 8.0 application, which is in the Adobe Illustrator folder.
3. Make sure Illustrator is not locked or on a read-only volume.
4. Drag and drop the Adobe Illustrator 8.0 application icon onto the AI8 Serial Fixer application icon.
The update uses the personalization information you supplied during the installation of Adobe Illustrator 8.0 to update the serial number in the application. To do this, the update requires the presence of the Adobe Registration Database file in your System Folder:Preferences folder. If this file is missing or otherwise damaged, you will need to first reinstall Adobe Illustrator 8.0 so the installation program can create a new Adobe Registration Database file.
For details about unlocking files and working with read-only volumes, see your Apple Macintosh User Guide or Mac OS Online Help.
You can also obtain Adobe Illustrator 8.0 Update for International English by calling Adobe Customer Service at 1-800-492-3623 and requesting a CD.

If you need to copy this update to a floppy disk, be aware that sometimes the update will not start from a floppy disk. This occurs when the system software does not correctly update the desktop file on that disk. You can solve this problem in one of two ways:
Make a copy of the update on the desktop and use this copy to update Illustrator. You make a copy by holding down the Option key while dragging the update to the desktop. This is the simplest procedure when you only need to update Illustrator on one machine.
Hold down Command+Option while inserting the disk into the floppy drive. The system will present a dialog asking whether you want to rebuild the desktop file on that floppy disk. Click OK and the system will rebuild the desktop file. You should now be able to use the disk to update Illustrator on any number of machines without needing to repeat this procedure.
